Editors Note:  I find the Tougas family thru-hike quite interesting.  Damien (the father) runs a site named Toe Salad now for several years; which reviews minimalist footwear.  The first thing that popped into my head was, whats going to be on their feet while hiking?!  Currently they are wearing zero drop footwear called Sole Runner.
